2008 Chevrolet HHR SS

Chevrolet is counting on the HHR SS to give buyers a proper re-introduction to the SS lineup.

Chevy has eliminated this problem in the HHR SS, which is great — there’s no sudden burst of power to break the wheels loose as you jet out of the corners. But turbo lag is also a cheap thrill, and to be honest, I kind of missed it. Chevy claims a 0-60 time of 6.3 seconds and a 15.8 second quarter mile, but the HHR SS doesn’t feel that fast.

The interior has a quality look absent from many competitors, and the ride is smoother without giving up much in cornering. Overall, we liked the ride/handling balance and the engine’s willingness to move at speed, and regretted a bit of low-end hesitation and some quirks.

The standard engine is peppy at high rpms, with a smooth but clear “power program” transition. At times, we wished for better off-the-line acceleration, but the standard 145 hp four (with 150 lb/ft of torque – something you won’t see on a four-cylinder Honda) moved the Cobalt automatic faster than most of its stick-shift equipped competitors, including the Civic EX and Corolla (around 8.5 sec).

That’s especially good when you consider the hefty weight of the Cobalt - 2,824 pounds – partly to assure high crash-test ratings. A weight-sensing passenger airbag and available side airbags help to increase safety as well.

The least likely of the trio is the Dodge Magnum, the station wagon we’re not supposed to call a station wagon.

The Magnum R/T has a nice ride and surprisingly good dry-road handling, with quite a bit of power; but it’s hard to break the rear tires loose for longer than it takes to chirp them.

Though big, it’s easy to throw through tight or fast turns, and works well on wet roads, keeping its footing even when we tried to knock it off kilter with sudden straight-line acceleration.

The SRT-8 ups the ante by over 80 hp, making it more difficult to keep the rear tires planted, especially on wet or dirty roads. Acceleration is a blast, and unpowered dry-clean road cornering is even better than the Magnum’s already-quite-good performance.

Acceleration is extremely good, but not always predictable. The engine makes good power in low rpms, but really comes into its own when revved.

The Mercedes 5-speed automatic transmission doesn’t always shift for optimal acceleration, but stays in low gears longer so if you hit the gas, back off the throttle for a moment, and still want instant power, you can get it.

Once you get the feel of the transmission and can consistently get that power, taking the odd grain of sand on the road into account, the SRT-8 feels as though it has far more brute force than cars with similar sprint times, such as the Lexus GS450h, albeit less than all-out sports cars like the Corvette.

In case you were wondering, the ideal-condition 0-6o time is about 5.0 – 5.2 seconds, with 0-100 in about 12 seconds, a 13-13.6 second quarter mile, a top speed of 165-170 mph (depending on quoted source), a skid pad rating of .9 g, and a zero to 100 mph back to zero time of under 17 seconds.

The interior has the usual SRT-style seats, with oversized side bolsters to hold you in place no matter how quickly you go around turns, and with a grippy cloth in the center of the seats (the bolsters are covered in clearly stitched leather).

Powerful seat heaters have two levels, and are visible at the bottom of the center stack. A special gauge set is used, the differences being oversized numbers on the temp gauge instead of letters, and a 180 mph speedometer that puts very illegal speeds where 60 mph would normally be.

Ford presented a photo that wants to put in work every sporty hatchback lover’s imagination.
The American constructor is preparing the RS version for Focus, much powerful than the ST, made now.

The Focus RS debut will take place next year, and we already know few things about its engine.

It seems that the new race Ford will have a turbo propeller of 2.5 litres from Focus ST, but we expect that the maximum power to be around 280 hp, an important rise (instead of the 225 hp of ST).

The same, the suspension announced will be a strong point for the car, because it will be more rigid and better settled than the previous one, which is very good, too, from ST.

Talking about the design, RS will be a great WRC car, with an impressive front spoiler, airing slips under the hood and probably a sensational aileron.

Well, we wouldn’t actually call a 2-litre Ford Focus miserable, but it’s not exactly the last word in feel-good motoring either.

ver in the States, however, $30,000 is serious money for buying motors. Sticking with Ford for a moment, $30k will buy you a full-on, pimped-out V8 Mustang with all the trimmings.
The entry level V6 starts at $19,000. Very good!

But the new Hummer H3 surely delivers the ultimate road-borne bang for your buck.
Try this for size: in excess of two tonnes (4,700lbs to be precise) Hummer heat can be yours for a preposterously parsimonious $29,500. OK, it might be little more than a re-bodied GM pickup.
By US standards the 3.5-litre, 220hp V6 may be thoroughly anemic.

It’s probably cheap enough to ruin the Hummer brand in the long run.
